The Conjure Woman

Boston and New York: Houghton, Mifflin and Company, 1899.
First edition. The African-American author's first book, a collection of short stories told to a white Northern couple in heavy dialect by Uncle Julius, a North Carolina freedman, about the antebellum South and slavery. The stories include: The Goophered Grapevine, Po' Sandy, Mars Jeems's Nightmare, The Conjurer's Revenge, Sis' Becky's Pickaninny, The Gray Wolf's Ha'nt, and Hot-Foot Hannibal. This collection of Uncle Julius tales was later the basis of the eponymous 1926 silent film. 229 pp.
Condition: Very Good. Boards rubbed, rear hinge cracked, faint dampstain to top corner of first ten leaves, slightly cocked.

Adirondack Tales

First edition. In five volumes uniformly bound in burgundy cloth with titles stamped in gilt on front boards and spines. First four volumes have same photograph portrait of the author. Vol. I: The Story of The Man Who Didn't Know Much; Vol. II: The Story of the Man Who Missed It, The Story That the Keg Told Me, and Who Were They?; Vol. III: Mamelons and Ungava, with Supplementary Notes; Vol. IV: Stories of Description and Humor; Vol. V: Sermons, Lectures and Addresses.

A compilation of "Adirondack Murray's" writings, covering both his fictional tales set in the Adirondacks and Labrador Peninsula, some favorite sermons from his years as a Congregationalist minister in Massachusetts and Connecticut, and stories featuring "John Norton the Trapper". Murray's writings helped popularize the Adirondacks as a health and vacation destination.
Condition: FVery Good (boards rubbed, corners rounded, owner signature in two volumes). Some uncut pages.

A comprehensive instructional book for advanced photographers tackling "light, color, contrast, perspective, motion, and mood" by the late photojournalist and freelance photographer. 356 pp.
Condition: Very Good in Good dust jacket. Jacket sunned and rubbed.

First Edition. Signed by the author on a front flyleaf. Gray cloth with titles stamped in gilt on spine. Printed sheet from The English Centre, Shimonoseki, Japan, signed by Secretary K. Sakimura, laid in, noting that the book was sent with compliments. Bibliography, short biographies of Japanese bookplate artists at rear. Bookplate belonging to K. Tsukamoto, designed with two female nudes signed "I. F." (Iwami Furusawa) pasted to front free endpaper. Many illustrations of Japanese bookplates, including some in color. 100 pp.
Condition: Very Good in Very Good dust jacket.

Seed-Babies
Margaret Warner Morley
Boston: Ginn and Company, 1896
First Edition. Cloth-backed pictorial boards. Charming pen and ink illustrations by the author. A book written for children imparting information about how different kinds of plant seeds grow, followed by chapters on insect eggs, frog eggs and bird eggs. The book is well-illustrated and features a pair of brothers, Jack and Ko (short for Nicholas) and their instructional conversations with all manner of talking seeds. Morley was an educator and woman's rights activist who also wrote many books for children about various aspects of natural history and biology, including human reproduction. 75 pp.
Condition: Very Good. Boards worn, especially at the corners, pages lightly toned, a few smudges.
